Rugby is a sport of skill, strength, endurance and teamwork. It is a highly popular sport around the globe, but especially in countries of colonial influence such as Great Britain, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa. Rugby is known for its blend of exciting plays and teamwork as well as displays of brute strength and endurance in its players.
Over the years, the sport of rugby has expanded and evolved, with different hemispheres abiding by slightly different regulations, however, all are united under the rules of international competition governing entities, such as the Rugby League International Federation.
The sport is played with two teams on a rugby field, also known as a pitch or paddock, which is a grass field that is 68 meters wide separated two in-goal areas separated by 100 meters of field. Each team will have fifteen players on the field, eight of which are forwards and the last seven as backs. The eight forwards will spend most of their time in the scrum, where they drive the opposing team backwards and recover dropped balls.
The backs are the playmakers, who find defensive holes and try to run through them on offense, while providing the last line of defense when the other team has the ball. The goal is for the offensive team to get the ball into the other team’s in-goal zone, resulting in a tree; or to kick the ball in-between the goal posts of the opposing team’s insecure area. Penalty kicks and drop kicks are awarded three points, conversions are awarded two points and a try is awarded five points. The team with the most points at the end of two 40-minute halves wins.
