Andrew Charlton graduated with advanced degrees in Economics from Oxford University in 2005. He returned home to Australia to join Kevin Rudd’s cabinet, the Prime Minister at the time. Charlton served as the senior economic advisor for Rudd for most of his term and was the senior economic representative for Australia at the G20 Leaders Forum from 2008 to 2010. Charlton, although fresh out of graduate school at Oxford, was uniquely suited for the job. By 2005, he was already an important voice in the worldwide discussion of economic policy and its effects on developed countries, undeveloped countries, and the world economy.
Andrew Charlton burst onto the worldwide economic thought scene when he co-authored a book called Fair Trade for All with Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz. The book proposed a radical new way to think about free trade in the global economy and how it affects developing nations. Stiglitz and Charlton worked on several academic articles and essays together in addition to their 2007 book.
Andrew Charlton took his economic thought to the Australian corporate giant Wesfarmers, a conglomerate with operations in many economic realms including department stores, supermarkets, coal production and export, and industrial products. Wesfarmers is one of the largest corporations in Australia and one of its largest employers. Charlton works for the company in a variety of capacities, including as an adviser. He says his role with Wesfarmers lets him apply some of the economic theories he has studied and developed over the years in school and as an academic writer.
